Fun Facts part 1

Because it is summer and summer is all about fun, this post I decided to share some fun facts about the Spanish language!

1) There are about 400 million native Spanish speakers worldwide. In comparison there are 360 million people who speak English as their first language. (https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/how-many-people-speak-spanish-and-where-is-it-spoken/)

2) While the English alphabet has 26 letters, Spanish actually has an additional letter, ñ, which brings its total letter count up to 27.

3) In Spanish, certain combinations of double letters create a new sound. For instance, a single L” in a word is pronounced the same way we do in English but double L’s” in Spanish produce a sound like the way we pronounce y” in yellow. Another double letter combination in Spanish is rr”. Double r’s” in Spanish are supposed to be rolled (like how you made a truck sound where you were a kid).

4) The use of Spanish on the internet as grown 1,312.4% from the years 2000 to 2015 and currently Spanish is considered the 3rd most used language on the internet. (https://takelessons.com/blog/language-of-Spain-z03)

5) All Spanish nouns have a grammatical gender but there are many Spanish words that are

spelled the same way but change meanings when they have a different grammatical gender. Some examples include:

Cometa: el cometa = comet; la cometa = kite

Corte: el corte = cut, blade; la corte = court

Frente: el frente = front; la frente = forehead

6) Spanish also uses accents on certain letters to change the way you pronounce a word and in some cases even change what the word means completely. For example:

Esta means this” while está means is.

Llamo means I call” while llamó means He, she, or you called.”

El means the” while él means he”

And while this is just scratching the surface, you can see that there are a lot of fun facts about the Spanish language that you may have never heard of before!
